Primary elections are elections within a political party to determine who will be the party’s candidate in the general election. Only those voters who have registered with the party may vote in a party’s primary election. NOTE: In the August 28th primary election only, because of the redistricting, registered voters may change their party affiliation up until August 11. To change your party affiliation, you would need to file a new voter registration form with the Suffolk County Board of Elections and, if the change is not yet recorded on the poll book when you go to vote, you should ask for an affidavit ballot.
